Funded Projects

A huge part of our mission here at Start the Wave is to FUND ACTION. We do this by redistributing money to projects that have a clear vision of creating a better world through well thought out action. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we are able to financially support grassroots initiatives around the world that are focused on creating positive and impactful change. See the beautiful initiatives we have been able to fund on the page below.

Grief Jam

Texas, United States Tonkawa, Coahuiltecan, Lipan, Apache, and Comanche territory

The Grief Jam is a supported and intimate space for people who have experienced any type of transition and are grieving, to move their bodies by freestyle dancing through grief as a collective.  There is no dance experience necessary, and people can move their bodies in ways that feel natural and nourishing to them.

This project moves me because it honors the way our ancestors grieved in community and in ceremony.  Grief has become this private thing that people do when no one else is around or people ignore grief completely, which has detrimental impacts on their mental and physical health.  There is great power in grieving with the collective and moving the grief that has been stored in the body out through dance and movement. Also, I am moved by making these healing experiences accessible and creating opportunities for BIPOC communities to connect with each other through movement, self-care, and vulnerability.

Water Protection Youth Network of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta

Magdalena, Colombia Gonawindua

The Water Protection Youth Network of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a local model called to become a global network. This is a proposal to strengthen environmental, ancestral, and citizen education, empowering youth to lead community processes to protect bodies of water, the land’s arteries that make life sustainable.

This is within the framework of Legislative Decree 1500 Línea Negra, which protects and safeguards the ancestral knowledge of the indigenous peoples of the Sierra and also protects sacred places of vital spiritual and ecological importance, such as the rivers that are born in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This territory of unique relevance is the world’s highest coastal mountain and encompasses five different climate zones. Its protection results from the historic struggle of the Kogui, Wiwa, Arhuaco, and Kankuamo peoples, who have fought with their lives for the recognition and respect of the land and their ancestral territories.

Through this project, we will contribute to global climate resiliency and ancestral sovereignty. This will be possible by promoting the protection of 10 essential rivers in the territory and empowering their communities in the search for social and environmental justice through a comprehensive ecological approach.

Nyota

North-Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo .

Nyota (which means star in Swahili) is a project that aims to improve the conditions of imprisoned women and the children who live with them in prison, by meeting their basic needs, particularly in terms of food and health.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the law allows imprisoned mothers to keep their children under the age of 5 with them. However, in such a hostile environment, these mothers do not have the necessary resources to provide for their children and offer them a minimum of care, security, or well-being.

Congolese prisons do not provide food for prisoners. As a result, prisoners have to rely on their families or on outside solidarity to survive. Added to this is the advanced state of disrepair of the majority of prisons, which have not been rehabilitated since colonial times. The conditions are inhuman: overcrowded cells, lack of drinking water, absence of sanitary infrastructures and medical care.

VOLVER A LA TIERRA TOUR / Back To Earth Journey (Previously funded 2020)

Magdalena, Colombia Seshiza

Back to Earth is an artistic and innovative project showing the importance of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta [Santa Marta’s snow-capped mountain range], located in Colombia, through an animated short displayed as a 3D hologram, to bring the understanding of the ancestral peoples of the land to our children and youth.

Our heart’s wish is for the Back to Earth Tour to be an annual event, bringing young people the ways that allow us to preserve the territory’s ancestral wisdom. This will allow us to create, during a 10-day period, a space to bring to the present the ancestral tools motivating us to deeply connect with nature and life itself.
